TMJ Treatment
That persistent jaw ache, the headache you wake up with, the clicking every time you open your mouth are all signs your temporomandibular joint may need attention. At Real Life Dental, our doctors treat TMJ disorders across our locations in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Salem, Roanoke, and Westlake.
We invite you to book a consultation with our skilled dentists and learn about TMJ treatment.
What is a TMJ Disorder?
Your temporomandibular joints are the hinges on either side of your jaw that connect it to your skull. A temporomandibular disorder (TMD) occurs when something disrupts how these joints move or how the surrounding muscles function.
The symptoms of TMJ disorder are more widespread than people expect.
Common signs include:
- Jaw pain or soreness
- Clicking or popping when opening and closing your mouth
- Difficulty chewing
- Jaw locking
- Morning headaches
- Ear pain or pressure
- Facial muscle tightness.
Common causes include:
- Nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Bite misalignment
- Jaw injury
- Arthritis
- Chronic stress-related clenching
These symptoms overlap with several other conditions, so a proper evaluation matters. If any of the above sounds familiar, a consultation is the right next step.
TMJ Treatment Options at Real Life Dental
There’s no single treatment that works for every TMJ patient. The right approach depends on what’s causing the problem and how severe it is. Our doctors will evaluate your bite, your jaw movement, and your symptoms before recommending a plan.
Here’s what we offer:
Oral Appliance / Occlusal Splint
A custom-fitted night guard or splint repositions your jaw and reduces grinding pressure while you sleep. This is typically the first-line treatment for TMJ and is effective for most patients.
Bite Adjustment
When bite misalignment is driving the dysfunction, careful reshaping of specific tooth surfaces (called equilibration) can relieve the stress on the joint without any major restorative work.
If your situation calls for a specialist referral, our doctors will tell you directly. We’d rather give you an honest picture than oversell what general dentistry can do.
Does Insurance Cover TMJ Treatment?
TMJ treatment sits at the intersection of dental and medical coverage, and the answer depends on your specific plan and the type of treatment recommended.
Dental insurance often covers custom oral appliances, particularly when the diagnosis is documented as bruxism or a sleep-related TMD. In some cases, patients use both dental and medical insurance to cover different components of treatment.
